It Turns Out Artificial Intelligences Are Aging Like Us!

Artificial intelligence technology, which just a few years ago was making its impact felt in our daily lives, is now playing a major role in many different sectors around the world. According to many people, one of the most important aspects of this new technology is that it thinks just like a human, has many times more information than us and never forgets this information.

But a new study says the opposite. Scientists have conducted research to examine whether the cognitive abilities of artificial intelligence models remain constant at all times, and found that these new technologies, just like us, age over time and their performance declines after a certain period of time.

Artificial Intelligence Models Show Signs of Forgetfulness and Decline in Cognitive Abilities as They Age

Published on December 20, 2024, this research made the technology agenda a few months after it was presented to the scientific world. Contrary to popular belief, scientists found that artificial intelligence has difficulties in performing well over time.

According to the research, actively used AI models may experience partial loss of some cognitive abilities after a certain period of time. So much so that most old AI models show signs of forgetfulness after a certain period of time and perform worse than before in logical thinking.

In their paper, the scientists state that they compared the new AI models developed with similar training data with the old ones. In the ability tests of popular models such as GPT, Gemini and Anthropic, which are scored out of 30, the newer GPT-4o model scored 26 points, while Gemini 1.0 scored only 16 points. In different versions of the same models, the newer version seems to think more clearly than the older one.

However, here we need to point out a misconception that even scientists fall into. We know that the artificial intelligence models in question are constantly evolving and that a new product is often more capable than the old one. Perhaps a large part of the results of the tests may be due to this situation. There is no explanation about this issue in the research.
